Look for communication before words

Pointing, leading you by the hand, scripting, handing you objects, using AAC, and pulling you toward a door all count as communication. Naming those signals helps you build from what already exists.

Work with regulation

A dysregulated child is not refusing language practice. Their nervous system may be using every ounce of bandwidth to cope. Short, predictable, interest-led routines usually beat long adult-directed drills.

Add support while you wait

Speech therapy waitlists are real, but waiting does not have to mean doing nothing. Parent-implemented strategies, AAC exploration, hearing checks, early intervention, and play-based routines can start now.

Quick answers

Is delayed speech always autism?

No. Speech delay has many causes. Autism is one possibility, especially when social communication differences are also present.

Can scripting be useful?

Yes. Many autistic children use scripts as meaningful language, especially gestalt language processors.

Important: Little Words is educational support for home practice. It is not a medical device, not an AAC replacement, and not a substitute for a licensed speech-language pathologist, pediatrician, or developmental evaluation.
